T-4 Electrical Tech

The Tecate 4 uses a Magneto style electrical system.

Located under the left side (Plastic) engine cover:

  • Flywheel
  • Lighting Stator Coil
  • Ignition Stator Coil
Mounted on the Frame:

LIGHTING SYSTEM TESTING:

Common Problems:

NO LIGHTS

Bike runs fine but no lights?

  • Faulty Lighting Stator, measure out stator Ohms & check output voltage with bike running
  • Faulty light switch / or switch unplugged at harness
  • Broken Harness wire
The Lighting Stator is the upper one (yellow wire) it is only used for lighting.

NO SPARK

  • Measure out Ignition Coil resistance - both primary and secondary sides
  • Measure out Stator Ignition Source Coil resistance
  • CDI Units do not fail very often - the easiest way to check them is swap it out for a known good unit
  • Don't forget to check the Key switch & Kill Switch.  An easy way to check is to unplug them from the harness - they turn the engine off by making the switch to ground.  If you unplug both the key and kill switch and still no spark these are not the problem
  • Check the wire harnes for chaffed wires - use an Ohm meter and check for grounds

FAILED FLYWHEEL

  • Stock Flywheel magnets can fall off and damage the stator and prevent the engine from turning over.  I think it happens more often when kicking the engine over - than when running.
  • The magnets are glued on and can fall off and lodge against the stator.  Water intrusion inside the cover will cause this.
Replacement Flywheels are availible from Ricky Stator

Replacement stator lighting and ignition source coils are also avalible through Ricky Stator, either as a complete set with mounting plate or just the coil you need.

If you choose to replace a single source coil ensure you have a high amperage soldering iron for instalation.
